Ordained as a Reverend for Soma & Oeming Wedding |
 |
From David Mack: |
 |
I just married Taki Soma and Mike Oeming.
I became ordained as a Reverend to officiate the wedding. Bendis was Best Man.
My title is Reverend, but Musician Nic Endo from Atari Teenage Riot called me "High Priest of Love" so that is what I prefer now.
The wedding was held at Ground Kontrol in Portland, a retro eighties arcade with free games, and pizza and drinks and cake that looked like Space Invaders.
Taki and Oeming loved it!
I just got back to Brian's from the after party. Was fun. Mike and Laura Allred came, Ivan Brandon flew in from NY. Bryan Glass flew in. Jamie Rich was there. Diana Schutz, and many more.
I'll post a few pics on my myspace tomorrow. |

You know the intersection of Northwest 5th Avenue and Couch Street? The corner with Floating World Comics, Ground Kontrol, Backspace and Compound? I always call that spot Geektopia. Then again, given Portland's outsized pull on the the national comics community, maybe I should expand that term to cover the whole city. We’ve got another nationally-known independent comics company in the metro area now, and last week an out-of-town comics couple came to PDX to get married. At Ground Kontrol.
The staff at Old Town’s ‘barcade’ report being surprised when what they thought was just a reception turned out to be an actual wedding, between Seattle comics creators Michael Avon Oeming and Taki Soma. Oeming was a series artist on Bulletproof Monk (made into a Chow Yun-Fat flick in 2003) and collaborates with our own Brian Michael Bendis on the acclaimed cops-and-capes series Powers, while Soma does the weekly webcomic You’ll Never Die. Bendis (Secret Invasion, Ultimate Spider-Man) served as Oeming’s best man, and his wife, Alisa, was Soma’s maid of honor, while Kentucky artist/writer David Mack (Kabuki) got himself ordained to officiate the ceremony. |

In spite of the recent accolades heaped on director David Fincher and his 2008 film 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', Paramount Pictures has failed to retain the rights to 'Torso', the fact-based comic that Fincher aimed to begin filming this year.
Paramount has been developing the movie, based on the outstanding graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Andreyko, since 2006. Word last year was that the film was attracting top acting talent, such as Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, and the Elliot Ness angle to the movie made it seem like a sure thing. However, later in the year stories began to emerge that time was running out for Paramount to renew their deal on the film. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that time has run out and no deal has been struck. |
