The mannequins remind me of all the statues I’ve seen in museums missing their arms and heads. I think of the Venus De Milo. Perfect woman of her era. Goddess of love and beauty. Now she has no arms. -- Kabuki: Metamorphosis #2

Re: (To ALL) this board...
SUN, 9/16/01, 4:05 a.m. - In Response To: Re: (To ALL) this board... (Magnus)

I understand why you react like this, yet I don´t react the same way. First and foremost I want to state that I am deeply shocked and offended by the act, and I can´t even begin to describe my compassion for the inflicted. That said, I find it too easy to just recognize their hatred of our civilization, and then respond with equal hatred. Instead, I pity them.
Hi Magnus,

I don't have any hatred toward them.

My post didn't say that at all. It said that I like to treat everyone the way I would want to be treated. I like to treat people in a loving way, and usually if they are just being rude or ignorant, they come to terms with that themselves when I respond with kindness, and generosity. Most of the time this works.

But if they make it clear that they do not want to discuss anything, they simply want to kill me or the people I care about, then I am not going to let them do that. And I am not going to wait for them to act on it a second time. I am going to act decisively to eliminate that threat.

It has nothing to do with hatred on my part.
It has to do with the preservation of my life and those that I love.

If someone wants to hate me, or my family, or my country, or may way of life, they are welcome to. I'm not going to hate them back. But if they make it clear that they are going to physically threaten any of those things, then I am going to thoroughly eliminate that threat.

Up until that point, maybe there are some complicated issues that we can discuss. We can talk about things. I can consider what you feel are injustices, your tough childhood, or how your frustration made you angry.

But once it reaches the point that you have decided to kill me no matter what, that you have dedicated your life to kill me, that you will try to kill me as long as you live, and that you will even give your own life just to kill me too, then I am not going to let you do that.

a waste of life. People spending their entire lives just to cause massdestruction on other. A hatred so huge has to have an origin. From what I´ve heard from fugitive friends, this action was based on a hatred which originated from differences between our world and their. The hatred of us not giving a crap about them. The hatred of our wealth, rather than our concept of capitalism. The hatred of our safety, rather than our freedom. Try to explain to a somali-farmer the reason why you have a computer, a car, an insurance or an education while all he has is 1 * legs to farm his few acres and just enough food to feed his children once a day. The unfairness grows and becomes despair, the despair grows and becomes hatred, the hatred grows and becomes terror. I´m not trying to justify the incident in any way. I´m not saying that we are the ones to blame in any way. I´m just trying to break down their pattern of thought.
Well, I don't think that you are going to break the pattern of thought of THIS group of people. Because their actions aren't driven by THINKING. This is not a philosophical, rational idealogy that they are relying on. They are driven by a mad sense of religious ferver, that tells them that our way of living is a blasphemy to thier god. Capitalism, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, separation of church and state... these are decadent things from thier perspective. If you can think of a way to change thier mind, be my guest.

And I don't think that they think that we "don't give a crap about them" because we have given them MILLIONS of dollars. I think it was 35 MILLION to the Taliban just last month to help them with the drug war. And we gave them a HUGE amount of weapons and money, and military training to help them defend themselves when the Soviet Union was trying to invade them. They took the money when we offered it. They took our help then. The CIA trained Ben Laden and his men to help them from being invaded by Communism.

So it is true, several of our policies in the past, have come back to bite us in the ass. And we should take proper measures to try to refine those kind of decisions. We should try to have better foreign policy. We should try to make sure our decisions do not make more people hate us. It seems that when we try to help one group, another group hates us. And when we help that group, then someone else decides to hate us. And it would be nice to be able to sort that out. But we also need to stop this immediate threat. At this stage, that is the priority. Now is not the time to whine about our past failures.

I also know that there is a huge difference to Somalia and Afganistan, yet their view on the West is very similiar.
I personally don´t understand how the hatred can end up being so huge, but I do understand how they percieve the world as unfair and how the injustice turns into hatred.
In the current situation the western world must strike down upon the perpetrators and upon terrorism as a whole. And it is possible to eliminate the current enemy by force. But we can´t eliminate the root of terrorism by force. To prevent anyone from ever hating our civilisation that much again, we must aim for a world where everyone has equal possibilities. The retaliation is important but the aftermath is equally important.

metamorphosis on Ebay (and original Scarab art)
SUN, 9/16/01, 4:12 a.m. - In Response To: is there a metamorphosis tpb? (stien)
my little brother just ruined my kabuki's 1 till 8 with chocolate milk. and i definitely don't have the money to buy the gorgeous hardcover. i wish i did then i could hit him with it.
Another option is to check on Anh's Kabuki auctions on Ebay.
Sometimes you can get a really good deal (cheaper than cover price) on things.

Right now she has a Meta Hardcover, Scarab original art, some prints and more. And everything she has there is signed.

Re: "Sleepers"
SUN, 9/16/01, 4:30 p.m. - In Response To: "Sleepers" (volto vox)

Hi Voxy Lady,

I can't tell if you are being serious or not. That version of the sleeper is from the film "The Manchurian Candidate" with Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbery. Rent it and you will understand. There are people that believe our government and others have done experiments to see if that sort of thing can be done. And some say it has been done, and is in operation. But this is a different story.

The "Sleepers" we are referring to here is the more conventional term that refers to an opperative infiltrating a certain society or agency and then acting as one of them, (maybe for years) , and doing nothing out of the ordinary until they are someday called on by their "Controllers" to do a certain deed.

David, what is a sleeper and how do you know if you are one? I read somewhere that many of these assassins don't even realise they are killers untill they are activated by reading or hearing a code word.

red fish, blue fish...
one fish, two fish...

Is this true?

Voxy Lady.

Re: Thank You David
SUN, 9/16/01, 4:50 p.m. - In Response To: Thank You David (Eric)
Hey David,

Hello, this is Eric. I am the one who wrote you that letter a while back after the Pittsburgh Comicon about my medical condition and how your Kabuki books were so uplifting to me...

I wanted to post and say that I am very impressed with your continued heart and passion during this time of crisis. I have printed out many of your heartfelt posts concerning this matter... I freuqent this board daily and I am further inspired by you and how open you have been with your feelings. You are truly a great guy and the more I see your posts and read your work, the more happy I am to have you as a friend as well as an inspiration.

Sincerely,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I'm glad you frequent this board. I hope that what you get out of my work and this board continues to be helpful and uplifting.

I'm also betting that your contributions in your life, on this board, and in the letter that I printed will be helpful and uplifting to others. So I want you to feel good about that. Especially in consideration of the things that we have spoken about before, and in what you have confided to me in your feed back.

One of the very important things that I learned early on, is that when we keep forging ahead according to our beliefs and enjoyments, and personal journeys, and do not coprimise them, even when the obstacles and challenges seem overwhelming, that there is a vast unchartable ripple effect that our actions have. And many times what you are doing is helping other people in ways that you would never have expected.

And you may not learn about it for years. You may never see the full extent of it. But now and then my eyes have been opened to positive affects that I was totally oblivious to. And I bet that after years of allignning your self with a sense of internal purpose, that you will catch glimpses of this to.

So I am glad that you are getting something from my works, but I want you to take joy, satisfaction, and a sense of purpose in knowing that you are also helping and have the power to make a positive effect with others, even though your present situation may appear overwhelming at times.

And I love your website. The 100 % idea was a brilliant concept for the contents page! I also saw the picture you had taken of us at the Pittsburgh Con. THanks for mentioning me.

David

Re: Kabuki: Dreams...Is there a HC out yet?
MON, 9/17/01, 3:59 p.m. - In Response To: Kabuki: Dreams...Is there a HC out yet? (Jason G)

Hi Jason,

The KABUKI vol 2 DREAMS Hardcover ships in October/November of this year. Please make sure your retailer orders it in advance.

But you can read the other volumes first and they will still make sense.

Thanks,

David

I have just begun adding Kabuki to my Graphic Novel Library and have been unable to locate a HC copy of Volume 2: Dreams. Please help, if you can I would very much appreciate it!

Does it exist?

If not, is one planned? (NohTV seems to indicate so)

If so, when?

I am really enjoying this thought provoking work, and look forward to completing my collection in an archival-quality format.

I wish more publishers would offer their work this way...

thanks,
Jason

Re: Kabuki 's Scythes

Was just browsing through nohtv.com to see if I could find anything new... btw David, I LOVED the experimental flash thingy! Anywaz, noticed at one time it was posted that Kabuki's scythes were possibly to be replicated..is this in the works? It this still even an option? It seems that the upcomming works page needs a good update (newest post tells of Scarab #5) So whats the story here... I want a pair of scythes!!

~Rezzy

Hi,

They have been sculpted and I just gave my comments about it to the sculptor last week. Looks great. They will be released next year!

Re: need permission: visual aides: kabuki
MON, 9/17/01, 4:12 p.m. - In Response To: need permission: visual aides: kabuki (Taylor Ellwood)
Greetings this message is for David Mack. I would like to get your permission to use soem panels or a page or two out of your Kabuki Circle of Blood Graphic novel to use as a visual aid for a paper I'm writing on the compositional components of comics. I'll be presenting this paper at a conference on comics in March of 2002. Please reply by email. Thank you. Taylor Ellwood
Hi,

Thanks for the interest in my work.
You are welcome to do so, under the standard conditions that I always present for this kind of thing.
Don't present any pages that may present violence or nudity. I don't like it presented out of context of the story.

I'd also suggest that maybe you consider some of the paged from Metamorphosis (KABUKI 1-9) as well. I think the painted stuff shows a new range of composition and sequential storytelling from KABUKI Circle of Blood.

I will indeed be at Megacon ORLANDO in Feb!
TUE, 9/18/01, 3:16 p.m. - In Response To: orlandocon (joshua2k)

I believe Andy Lee and Brian Bendis will also be there.

the orlandocon 2001, website has announced an appearance by mr. mack this upcoming february. just wondering if this is confirmed - looking forward to meeting the artist behind the most magickal art series ever...

LEE's Comics at MountainView, CA THIS Sat...
TUE, 9/18/01, 5:53 p.m.

Unfortunately the signing with Brian Bendis and I at Lee's this weekend is canceled.

Mostly, this is because the airline cannot assure us that our connecting flights will actually connect on time. If one of the flights is a half hour late, We'll miss the next flight, therefore missing the entire signing event, and also being stuck in St. Louis for an unknown ammount of time.

Both Lee and I have spent hours on the phone trying to reach airline attendants about a solution to this (as in transferring us to a DIRECT flight) but this has been unsuccesful.

I feel really bad for Lee because he invested thousands into advertizing our signing there. He really takes care of his customers. He even printed 1000 copies of a KABUKI print just for this show. He was going to give it away free to the first 500 customers that show up for the signing. The print is a brand new Scarab painting that I did just for this event.

Lee said that he is still going to give the print away free to everyone who shows up to his store this Saturday. So I urge everyone who was going to attend, to go to LEE's COMICS this SATURDAY and pick up a print of my new SCARAB painting.

This artwork has never appeared anywhere else, and LEE's is the only place you can get it. And it is FREE. But it is FREE this SATURDAY only.
After this Saturday he is going to be selling it for $20 each to try to recoup some of his advertizing and printing investment.

Hopefully we can reschedule a signing at LEE's sometime in the future. If so, bring the print to me then, or at the WonderCon or any other con, and I will be happy to sign it for you.

Kindest regards,

David Mack

Re: Scarab original art on Ebay
TUE, 9/18/01, 9:19 p.m. - In Response To: Scarab original art on Ebay (MACK!)

I forgot to say,

Congrats to Walter AKA REALTV(from this board) on winning the other Scarab artwork.

Thanks Magnus,

I really appreciate your comments. For any one who is missing any of the Scarab issues or is interested in some of the art, or prints, Anh has a big lot of all of that together at ebay right now.

Paris Convention...
WED, 9/19/01, 5:41 a.m. - In Response To: Question for Mr Mack... (french tbolt)

Hi T-bolt,

Brian Bendis, Mike Oeming, and I were scheduled to attend the Paris show together. We were very excited about attending the Paris show together.

Unfortunately, in the wake of last week's events, I regret to announce that we will not be attending the Paris show this year. Brian, and Mike are not willing to leave their families (in Mike's case wife AND child) to go out of the country when we are not sure at what phase this situation will be in by then, or at what level our airlines will be operating at that time.

We have asked the Paris Convention to reschedule us all together at a future date next year. I will definitely update you as soon as I have any more news on the subject.

Thanks for asking.

I look forward to meeting you again in France next year.

Who knows, maybe I will be able to do the next Angouleme show again too.

David Mack

Hello!

I just would like to know if you're alwais be coming to Paris at the end of October...I also would like to know
the dates of your visit...

respectfully

I will have big news on the Kabuki FILM very soon
WED, 9/19/01, 5:44 a.m. - In Response To: How is the Kabuki animation coming along? *NT* (j)

Some things have changed. For the better.

I can't say much about it at this point, but it is all very exciting.

Re: I will have big news on the Kabuki FILM very s
WED, 9/19/01, 5:25 p.m. - In Response To: Re: I will have big news on the Kabuki FILM very s (Bryan Goff)
Cool, 2 quick questions. 1. Will it be striaght to video or theater release? 2.Will it have a anime look to it?
Bryan Goff
It has always been planned by Fox as a feature film theatrical release. Still is.

Part of the news is, that the new division of Fox I've started working with earlier this year has decided that at this point they are now approaching it as a live action [Kabuki] film.

Two or three years ago, we began approaching it as an animated film becouse it seemed like it may not have been able to be pulled off as live action, and still live up to the spirit of the book.

But now, films like Crouching Tiger, or the matrix and others have proved that it can be done as a drama oriented live action film and still pull off the needed set and effects.

That's all I can say now.

WED, 9/19/01, 5:33 p.m. - In Response To: Re: Paris Convention... (JMM)

Hi Jean-Marie,

I hope you are doing great. It is very nice to hear from you. I heard from Xavier last week. He said that Lise & Fabrice had a baby girl! My greatest regards to them, and you as well!

I had a great time with you and the Comic Box team in Angouleme, and Paris earlier this year. All of you are great people.

And of course I had a fascinating adventure with the theft and then RECOVERY of our belongings! I really appreciate all of you for all of your help. I really had a fantastic adventurous time, and am very glad that I was able to meet all of the wonderful people at Comic Box and all of our wonderful readers and fans.

I'm sure I will return next year in some way or another.

Best,

David

Re: Daredevil: Parts of a Hole TPB!!!!!!
WED, 9/19/01, 5:37 p.m. - In Response To: Daredevil: Parts of a Hole TPB!!!!!! (Benjamin Simpson)

I am glad to hear that this will finally be out. This is actually the first I've heard of it, so I'm not sure about the cover sitiuation. Based on the solicitation copy here, I imagine that they will ask me to do a brand new painted cover for the [Parts of a Hole] trade, which I will be more than happy to do.

FINALLY!!! This is solicited in the October Previews....

DAREDEVIL: PARTS OF A HOLE
painted cover by david mack

• THE SCOOP: Collecting acclaimed-writer David Mack's surreal story of the Man Without Fear, incredibly rendered by Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Rob Haynes!
• THE STORY: Meet Daredevil's newest foe and Matt Murdock's latest love... the enigmatic Echo! What is her connection to the Kingpin? Why does she want to kill DD? And why will she stop at nothing to achieve her goal? Reprints DAREDEVIL (Vol. 2) #9 - #15.
• THE FORMAT: 160-page trade paperback. 7-59606-?-00111 16.95

I missed out on the first few issues of "Parts of a Hole", so this is going to be a great chance to read them all together.

David, did you do a new cover for this collection, or are they going to reuse one of the covers from the regular series?
