Themes in Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club |
 |
From David Mack: |
 |
The theme of "You are going to die sooner or later - maybe right now - get busy doing what you are here to do" is something I find very motivational in the film. Very powerfully visualized by the "Human Sacrifice" theme. And the scene in which Tyler is driving the wrong way into traffic and asks the two passengers in the back of the car what they wished they would do before they die: "Build a house" - "Paint a self-portrait." Both metaphors for creating your life.
I like the idea of forcing yourself to bash up against reality in order to snap yourself out of the sleepwalk of the things that don't matter but make you think they do in order to free yourself for what you really need to be doing. What is really important to you.
I like the metaphor of: after being punched in the face over and over - the volume of everything else goes way down. Not much of that mundane stuff is distracting anymore. You can let that stuff slide and not be worked up about it. And do the things in your life that have meaning to you. |
