Origins of David Mack's Chop |
When asked about the origins of his chop, the signature stamp seen in his paintings, David Mack replied: |
I had several of them made by hand when I was in China and Japan. I have one that says Kabuki in the kanji characters, and I had a set made for my brother and I that is the kanji for big brother and little brother. I've used the big brother symbol in some of my signatures.
That square one is a chop sent to me as a gift from Miss Fumiko of the First Zen Institute of America. Her grandfather Sokei-an founded the Zen Institute long ago, and she sent me a wonderful set of Zen chops some time ago.
I had incorporated it into my work like I have many of the materials that she has sent for the last decade.

Webmaster's Note |
My apologies if you were unable to reach David Mack Guide on Saturday from around 4 pm to 2 am (Central). The hard drive on the server crashed and I did not know about the problem until I returned to my room (very, very!) late on Saturday night during the Pittsburgh Comicon. Also, the next news update may be delayed until Friday, May 4 due to the workload at my office. |
