On that lazy Sunday two years back, Diana Schutz, an editor at Dark Horse Comics, was reviewing amateur artist portfolios at a comic convention in Portland. She was seeing a lot more eagerness than originality, and absolutely nothing she could promote back at the office.

That changed when David Mack and Brian Michael Bendis, two other comic veterans, dragged Joelle Jones to her table and said, "You've got to look at this girl's artwork."
