Re: New here...
THU, 1/8/04, 1:24 a.m. - In Response To: New here... (Carrie)
Hi everyone, newbie alert! I don't know how I haven't stumbled across this board before, as I love Mack's work (both on Daredevil and Kabuki). So thanks to Alice for the link on the manwithoutfear.com to the interview at Sequential Tart which in turn had a link to this board. Phew! Well, I'm here now, anyway. I've just finished reading Vision Quest, and am re-reading bits and pieces of Kabuki before Alchemy comes out. A very agreeable pastime.

Seems like a friendly board!

Carrie

Welcome!
Thanks for reading.
David

THU, 1/8/04, 1:26 a.m. - In Response To: malaysian fan (WorldHurricane)
hey david,
tyler here. i ran into this girl at deviantART who did a watercolor painting that i commented on. she mentioned your work, i told her about putting up the show at nku, and this was her response: "Dude, I'd probably kill a few goats to be able to see him in real life! And I'd murder a cow to get his books. Though they're not that rare here, getting my hands on them is quite difficult as I dont go out often enough to catch each issue. I heard he was making a movie too, there was even a poster for it in one of the books, but I thought it was a joke thing. I mean, it had Gong Li and all as cast. Thats like.. no way! If you see him again, please tell him there's this girl in Malaysia who's a big fan."

i didn't realize you were so well known

Hey Thanks!
Please give her my regards, and my invitation ot post on this board. You are both welcome to post your artwork and promote your art endeavors here if you wish.
Best,
DM

Re: Scarab figure
THU, 1/8/04, 1:30 a.m. - In Response To: Scarab figure (pup)
Okay. We know the Kabuki figures and other new items were held back for the release of the new series. Well, January is the big month - so can we assume I can get my hands on a Scarab figure by February? Mack? Anyone? My Kabuki figures are getting lonely.

- pup

I understand that the Kabuki sickle and the new action figures (starting with SCARAB, then Siamese) will be offered this year as the Kabuki series is in full swing. I should have an ad in the first issue of Kabuki Alchemy that has the exact date.

DM

Re: mr.mack
THU, 1/8/04, 1:37 a.m. - In Response To: mr.mack (steph)

Hi,
Thanks for reading and for the thoughful post. Wow. A lot of these questions are things that I deal with in the new Kabuki ALCHEMY story. So I'm sort of trying put the answers to all of these questions in a clear and understandable way, as a lot of people seem to be very interested in this. As I am myself. For specifics with me, check out a lot of my recent interviews. Including the one in the Cincinnati Enquirer and City Beat. you can still find them on line. Just google them with my name. And for more intimate detail, check out the series and let me know what you think.

Thanks,
David

dearest mr. mack, forgive my grammatical mistakes because i'm sitting here quite obliterated at 10 in the morning. I'm trying to be quiet w/ my boyfriend behind me sleeping. I can.t express to to you what your work has done for me. My feeble rhetoric could not come near what I would like to say of your work. The explosion of stimulus which you create is unmatched. Reading your poetry, envying your brush strokes, understanding your loss, i am overcome. Your work has proven to me to be as literarily captivating as any classic epic and as visually stunning as any truly recongnized master's work. david, you talk of different types of genius. You seem to juggle them all quite well. What is the key to organizing your talents so that you don't spread each one so thin that you render them all useless? How do you maintain an artist's mind in so many departments sucessfully? I am by no means a recluse. I work as a bartender in the only "rock" bar in my town, i have people skills. I have been a decent painter all of my life, always written feverently, danced and sang. i feel like I have all of the abilities that are good for nothing in this world. Where does this left brainedness come into play with someone so involved with the arts? In the mean time I am in awe of your persecution and order and your grasp on perfection and equillibrium inspires me. you are an amazing exception. my awe is inexplicable. please tell me what it is that keeps you from being disuaded and polluted. I feel that my vices are getting the best of me, i feel weak. What has helped you david? It means everything to me what you say. thank you, steph

Congratulations!
And thanks,
David

just wanted to say i think you're the best comic artist in the world right now, because there is nothing like your art. the fact that you write some of the best stories ive ever read comic or otherwise is just mind blowing.

I recently handed in a piece of coursework for my Multimedia course. under influences i only had one name, David Mack. I fell into comics and one of the first i read was Wake up, i still read it every few weeks. Until i read that and was amazed by the artwork, all of my pictures had no form. i was lost. My work isnt like yours.... more modern but with a feeling of hand crafted work. and nowhere near as good.... but thanks to Wake up, Skin deep and just about every alias cover, ive found my style and im sticking with it.

And i got the highest grade on the course for that bit of work. so thanks

NEW Scarab T-shirt - GAI JEANS!
THU, 1/8/04, 1:45 a.m. - In Response To: Thanks Mack (nigel)
Hey David

Wow I just heard about Kabuki: Alchemy and I can't wait to see what you have in store for Kabuki, Akemi & the rest. Also I loved the way you ended Echo's story in Daredevil. Looks like she created some "Alchemy" for herself as well.

I see that the cover of my first Kabuki comic (Scarab #2) is being made into a t-shirt (very cool!!) Will there be any other Scarab art making it to t-shirt form?

There will be the new T-shirt that is the cover of Scarab #2 and the next month, there will be a black T-shirt that just has the big GAI JEANS logo... also from Graphittil designs.

Glad to see you in Toronto! I intend to be there again this year!
Best,
David

PS. Thanks for signing my 'circle of blood' book at the Toronto Comic Con . I didn't even know you were gonna be there! It was a great surprise.

Hi,
Thanks for reading and posting!
I intend to be in Toronto again this year, please try to stop by and introduce yourself.
Best,
DM

Hello David Mack and everyone on this message board, I am a fairly new comic book writer and I have discovered David Mack's beautiful artwork/storytelling through Daredevil. I just wanted to congratulate David on the great job he does on everything he works on and I hope to see you at a convention soon (I was at the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in Toronto this summer, but unfourtunately, I couldn't drop by your table :-(. I hope you will come back to Toronto in the future. I am looking forward to that). To everyone else on this board, Happy New Year ! And happy comic-book reading (ok, I realize that sounds a bit cheesy, but... it's true). Hope to talk to everyone here in the future.

Also a signing with Bendis and Andy Lee in Portland con in October. I think the weekend of Oct 10.

Re: News: Upcoming convention appearances
THU, 1/8/04, 5:20 p.m. - In Response To: Re: News: Upcoming convention appearances (Carrie)
Is there any way we can tempt you over towards Western Europe, David? UK, France, Ireland, or anywhere within striking distance? There must be cons over here too (the last one I went to was about 20 years ago!). It would be so good to see your work *up close and personal*, as, from what I hear, the printed page doesn't do it justice. Wow - it's pretty amazing stuff in print, but I would so like to see it in its original format.

It looks like this year's pretty busy for you, but maybe next year? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see
you show your work over here :-)

Carrie

Thanks!
I love being in Europe. I usually go at least once a year to do book signings and some conventions. This usually corresponds with a European publisher arranging for me to travel in promotion with a newly translated Kabuki book.

There will be a new French translation of Kabuki Cirlce of Blood debuting this Spring. So perhaps I will be in France sometime this year, or possibly in the Festival of Anguleme next January.

And a new Itallian translation is in the works, so I hope to visit Italy as well as soon as I can.

And when the new Kabuki series is in full swing, it should be a good time to arrange a new European book signing tour for me, like I did a couple times when my last series was in full bloom.

I'll keep you updated on this board of these developments! Best!

David

Hello David,

I remember a while back you said you were going to a con here in the northwest around the beginning of this year? Is that still on, or not, or was it the pizza?

thanks,
peace,

chris

Chris,
It turns out the Portland show I'm doing is the October one. I hope you can still make it. You live in Portland now don't you?

It was good to talk with you in Chicago. Thanks for the kind words about my Echo story. I'm glad you got something from it.

Are you going to any other cons this year?
Best,
DM
