In Response To: if form follows function... (4)

22 is a great age to start freally ocussing on your work. You don't have to be making a living soley on your art right when you start on it. But the important thing is to get your self in the ring. Get in the game and go for it. Like Woody Allen said: "80% of success is just showing up".

That means that you just have to do what you know you are supposed to do. Don't let your reactive mind get you to second guess yourself and stop you from even trying.

You usually don't make perfect stuff the first time you do it. But you have to just do it to get there. The getting there arises from the doing it. The doing it is most of the getting there. Usually you work on your craft for years and years and at a certain point it begins to take on the qualities that satisfy you.

The creators of the literature and films and artwork you admire are examples of this. The work of thiers that you are looking at is not their first work. But a culmination of years of craft.

Your first work isn't going to compare to that. But after years of getting it out there, working it in the real world, you begin to find yourself in it.

Hope this helps.

: 'we must find out what words are and how they function.
: they become images when written down, but images of
: words repeated in the mindand not of the image of the
: thing itself.' William S Burroughs-

: i read this today, it reminded me of a message i read
: yesterday in a scarab issue-
: mack was talking about art and the artists who would be
: helping him with his series' of the noh agents.
: he mentioned how 'form follows function' and how rick
: mays (scarab artist- freakin rad one too) understands
: this and has been able to put form and function
: together to create anime art that still resembles
: reality.
: i have time to waste on thinking of these things because
: that's all i ever do. not really wasting time, but
: waiting...for what, it's not quite clear.
: also reminds me of being 17 and trying to convince my
: girlfriend of something, how words seem to provoke
: feeling, not just in the mind but through all senses,
: i described french fries, the texture as it changes
: while chewing, the heat as it first touches the
: tongue, etc... and i even threw some ketchup in there
: to top it off, basically trying to prove that memories
: and thoughts can be...experienced with taste, touch,
: smell, hearing, and sight. she ended up losing her
: dinner in the bathroom toilet of the restaurant we
: were in.
: no point really, i just can't seem to understand
: anything.
: i'm tired of wasting my time delivering pizzas just so
: that i eventually run my car down and have to get a
: new one. i don't have that kind of money. i refuse to
: work for a, well Beck said it nicely -'soul suckin
: jerk' and so i still sit here working on my childhood
: dreams- to become a comic book artist. i'm pretty
: good, but i get discouraged when i read literature,
: watch movies, or look at art that just amazes me
: beyond belief. it's as if i'm better at knowing talent
: when i see it, than i am at actually proving myself
: worthy. don't get me wrong, i've done alot of
: regretable things, but i've made a point not to cross
: certain lines.
: and everything i see still guides me despite that i am
: getting older and my youth is now falling away, in a
: manner of speaking. i think i Am smart, everyone
: always thought so, but the older i get,...the more i
: feel useless. not that it matters so long as i keep
: trying. but i've felt more frustrated in my last
: couple of years than ever before.
: i think my problem is this: i am finding it increasingly
: difficult to function in such a way that any form
: whatsoever will come out of it... other than for
: myself to die trying. whereas, i'd rather feel like
: i've gotten somewhere---far away from the pulse of the
: pizza delivery business, (preferrably in comics) i've
: got skills, i can write, but i don't like to write
: fiction, it drives me nuts, i'd rather write articles
: or interviews- problem with that is it seems unreal- i
: have no idea how some kooks get those kinds of jobs.
: i'd like to work with a writer, as an assistant or an
: artist, doesn't really matter, just got to get out of
: this place. i'm not meant for restaurants or carwashes
: or grocery stores, i want to be with you people, but i
: need to get paid. does mcelman get paid for what he
: does? sorry folks, i know everybody's got to deal with
: their own versions of this same stuff. but on the
: other hand, not everybody writes about on the fabulous
: website of DAVID MACK!
: alright g'nite y'all, if anybody out there knows of a
: decent job i can work, i'm available, and skilled, and
: if it's worth it, i'm willing to relocate or whatever.
: i could really use some ideas though. i'm only 22 and
: getting older by the moment.
: thanks
