I know Kabuki is not everybody's cup of tea. It is very non-mainstream... But if you like all of Kubrick's films, I think you will dig Kabuki.

Re: Mack in Orlando
MON, 1/7/02, 12:01 a.m. - In Response To: Mack in Orlando (JayPee!)

mr. david mack! i live in orlando, very close to the orange county convention center. i'm trying to plan a party after one of the shows and i wanted to invite you and a bunch of the other really cool people at the show. bendis already said he's gunna try to show. lemme know what you think. any of you other folks in the area interested contact me. i just wanna have a little comic shindig and try to get mark waid drunk.
ciao.
j.p.
Hi j.p.

Thanks for the invite. I really appreciate it, but I rarely show at the con parties. As much as I enjoy the signings and conventions, by the end of the day I'm us usually sick of hearing my own voice, and use the convention evenings as an oppertunity to have a quiet evening with friends that I mostly only see at cons.

But I hope to see you at the show. Please stop by and introduce yourself. Bendis, Andy Lee and I should be set up right next to each other.

Best,

DM

Re: my Kabuki-inspired book
MON, 1/7/02, 12:10 a.m. - In Response To: my Kabuki-inspired book (Lauren)
Hello. You'll have to exscuse the formalities. I need to post this before I lose my nerve.

http://nohx.philedom2k.com/cover.html

This is a link to a fan piece I did for Kabuki.

Hi Lauren,

It is good to see you on the message board here. Thank you for posting your artwork here. I actually saw it earlier too. Someone forwarded a link to me when they saw it on the KABUKI ONELIST. But I figured I shouldn't comment on it unless you specifically wanted to present it to me.

I really enjoyed it! It is very impressive. Thank you very much for the dedication. It is fascinating for me to look at someone else's work (especially when it is as good as yours) and see some of my own influence in it. I'm really glad that you are able to get so much inpiration from Kabuki and my work and still have your own direction.

Thank you for reading my books. And don't be a stranger here on the message board. You are welcome to post your work here and interact with the other artists and readers on the board.

Kindest regards,

David Mack

To ARIE...
MON, 1/7/02, 12:15 a.m. - In Response To: Took you long enough to post it ! (Arie)

I just wanted to thank you for the card you sent! The one with all the Noh agents that you drew!

We really appreciate it. We've had the one that you sent before sitting in the living room. It was great to see your own art! I had no idea you were so talented in that area.

And if I didn't say so before ( I can't remember), thank you very much for the very expressive letter about what you get out of Kabuki. That was great. We also have the photo that you sent of your wife and daughter in Kabuki shirts hanging up.

Happy New Year,

David

Re: Happy New Year to David and Mrs Anh and all...
MON, 1/7/02, 12:52 a.m. - In Response To: Happy New Year to David and Mrs Anh and all... (Miss Fumiko)

Hi Fumiko!

Happy New Year to you as well! As always, your words are a delight and an encouragement. I love your "art is medicine" line. I feel the same way (on several levels).

In reference to your mentioning of a Japanese woman asking about if I consciously put "feminism" in my books, I think that what I said was that I don't see things in "isms" and that I do not approach my work through "isms". I actually try to avoid "isms" altogether.

I am glad that people find affirmation, validation, encouragement, and inspiration in my work. But those things are meant for all readers to get. Not just one sex, or any other group or "ism". I think that what I said was that I write from a "personal" or "human" point of view. Not a "gender" or "ism" point of view.

I think you will find that approach inclusive and accesable and inspiring to all. I appreciate that all genders and races appreciate the book. I appreciate that feminists appreciate the book. But one of the themes in my books is to trancend these categories, groupings, and isms. It is to hopefully inspire readers to see the reality of people themselves instead of seeing people through a lens of labels and "isms". The idea is (in Akemi's case anyway) that even simple labels and categories such as gender (male and female) can not even categorize everyone. Some people do not fit into even those simple labels. And ultimately, these labels are silly.

In reference to your mention of Anh, I hope that there is no misunderstanding, but that part was a little confusing to me. Anh adores you. She really enjoyed meeting you in NYC. She send you a card out of sincerity. It was a piece of your artwork that she wanted to share with you, since you mentioned some well regards to her in one of your missives to me. I passed on your kind words, and she felt that it was good to share something of hers with you as you did so with her.

Both of us have nothing but the best regards for you. But I think part of your post confused her. I assure you that there is no wierdness in the way that it seems you may have percieved it. It never crossed either of our minds. Each of us have nothing but the sincerest regards for you. You have been writing to me personally for a long time, and I hope that you continue if you so desire. Anh totally understands that. I am glad that you are on the message board and I thank you for your mail. It is always a pleasure! I recently returned home and found your new package which I very much appreciate!

Thanks for the New Years Wish! I actually saw it right around Midnight! When we were celebrating with some friends.

Best,

David

If so, when and where..

I can't to see it in stores. Probably the new Jan date you mentioned is correct. If I hear any other specific date, I'll post it here.

1.) How soon till Moore Creations makes an "Ice" snow globe with little silver snowflake shurikan floating in it? I actually will buy one if it's "cool" enough.
Hello,

Thanks for the questions. There is actually a plan for something like this. Not through Moore Creations but through Diamand Select. They do want to make a unique sort of Kabuki sphere. I'll give the details when it comes about.

3.) What are "blood diamonds"?
I'm glad to see that Ron posted an informative link on this. Thanks RON!
4.) After the Kabuki books saw print there was a direct change in Japan's government policy concerning comfort women...

%.) comic books and their readers could be a force to bring about possible positive political change in the world today.

I totally agree. And not limited to political change. Evolution on other levels as well. And I am happy to say I see the positive effects of this first hand everyday.
And I see noh reason why such a kind and benevolent artist who is so sensitive and has his finger on the "World Pulse" couldn't have a sub-plot running through his personal life where, since he's on the road anyway hawking his wares, he could become a hero and still write about them.
I'm way ahead of you on this one. But I really appreciate that you said this. I don't think a lot of people consider this sort of thing. But you are right on. And very clever.
Did ya ever see Francis Ford Coppola's "Rumblefish?"
Yes.
I'll see your best wishes and raise you a social conciousness,
Again, I really appreciate that your mind and heart are in this direction. My stories can exist as just stories. But there are other things in there beyond that, if people wish to see them. And they usually do see them when they are ready to. I do have specific intentions that I put into the story. And I do have real life actions that I do outside of the story. But I find that it is more effective if the change and realizations that put all these things together are figured out by the readers. Instead of me telling them how to think, they can figure out things themselves and learn more in the process this way.

Red FISH, BLUE Fish...

Best Cover Artists
David Mack (Swamp Thing, Kabuki, Daredevil, and Alias) Speechless. That's how David Mack will leave you. It was really nice to see Mack take a break from Kabuki and the Scarab mini-series to do some work for the big two. It would have been worth it for the Swamp Thing series to continue for Mack's covers, but all is forgiven with his Alias covers. I can't believe by the cover that Alias is a Marvel book. You know it's something different and the cover sets that up. As much as I love Alex Maleev's art on Daredevil, I wish Marvel would have kept Mack as cover artist. One look at his covers on Bob Gale's run on Daredevil and people will know why Mack is a big name talent.

Best Serialized Story
"Parts of a Hole" Daredevil #9-15
David Mack became a name to mainstream readers because of a deep story of intense rapture and psychosis in "Parts of a Hole." He enticed us with a female counterpart for Matt Murdock and left us biting our lips when he left the Kingpin blind. As a result, the interest in Mack's creation, Kabuki soared. It's a shame it took them so long to notice but I guess it's better late than never. I know the early part of this story came out last year but a bulk of the excitement came out in first quarter 2001. A memorable story indeed.

Cheers!
David Thornton

i don't remember where i saw this, but it was a black girly styled kabuki tshirt that had the noh dragon tatoo in white on the back. does anyone know where i can find this shirt?
Hello,

These are offered in the checklist in the back of the newest Kabuki books.

Anh also makes them available on e-bay from time to time. She had photos of her in the different Kabuki shirts so you could see them.

You can order them from the checklist, or ask more questions in you need more info, or contack Anh directly at Anh2tran@yahoo.com.

Thanks for reading.

Re: I finished CIRCLE OF BLOOD
TUE, 1/8/02, 2:45 p.m. - In Response To: I finished CIRCLE OF BLOOD (jason, the 1223)

Hi Jason,

Again, thanks for such a passionate review of my work. I really appreciate your feedback on it. Very glad you liked Circle of Blood after reading and liking Metamorphosis. I'm glad that even though you are reading them in the wrong order that they still work for you. I urge you to read Skin Deep. It is really the first part of the Metamorphosis story. Let me know what you think when you do. Now for some of your questions:

Question: is the SCARAB series collected yet?
A hardcover collection of Scarab 1-8 will be offered in the next previews catalogue. It reads very well collected in this way.
planning on doing series based on all the Noh agents?
I do plan to do a story on each and every one.
Also, is METAMORPHOSIS the end of Kabuki's story or will there be more?
There is MUCH MUCH MUCH more to Kabuki's story. Metamorphosis is more like the beginning than the end.

Remember what it said on the last page of Meta: Z is for zero. A reset clock. The point of a new beginning.

Re: trading card set
TUE, 1/8/02, 8:25 p.m. - In Response To: trading card set (Ken Meyer Jr.)
Hey, Mr. Mack man, any truth this age old rumor that there is a Kabuki card set in the works? And who might the other artists be, if any besides yourself, that would be featured in said set? Is the earth round? Are cheetohs really made of cheese? Oh tell me, wise man!
WOW! This could only be a visit from acclaimed artist Ken Meyer Jr!

Besides contributing a piece of art to the Kabuki Gallery in 95, I've heard that he is rumored to have painted a new Kabuki piece (Ice to be exact, I mean I HEARD) to appear in the Kabuki Card set. I heard that he painted it long ago and gave it to Mr Mack to put in the Kabuki card set. Only the card set still has not come out! And Ken's Ice painting has still not been returned to him.

I heard that it was to be a 90 card the card set and that plans for it fell through a couple times with two previous card set producers and that Mr Mack was now talking with another card set producer in hopes for this card set to finally come out (especially so acclaimed artist Ken Meyer Jr's Ice painting would eventually see the light of day and be appreciated by fans world wide, and that once it was printed Mr Mack would finally return Ken's orignal painting to him).

But that is just what I heard.

Re: Signing dates in FRANCE!
TUE, 1/8/02, 8:48 p.m. - In Response To: Signing dates in FRANCE! (MACK!)

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm looking forward to my visit.

I will be signing at the Marvel France Booth at Angouleme. Kabuki is published by Marvel in France. The French translation of Kabuki Metamorphosis should be out, I think, Next month.

As I'm signing at the Marvel France booth, I do not know how much space I will have to display my Original art and prints and books and stuff. But I will have original Kabuki and Daredevil art available for sale at all of my signings.

I will also have a large sellection of Kabuki prints and probably Kabuki T-shirts and books. And I will be happy to sign all of the Kabuki (or Daredevil) books & merchandise that you pick up from me, and all the books that you want to bring to get signed from your own collection.

If you have specific things in mind that you are looking for from me (specific books or art?), let me know ahead of time and I will try to bring them.

Best,

David

I knew you had a sense of humor, you table jumping foo foo!
Hope it does come out, I still like that painting..and, hey, if it does come out, I can resubmit it to Spectrum...maybe touch up the background digitally or something...speaking of which, have you finally started using computers, you Luddite???

You are still the man, no matter what all those people say....

Thanks Ken,

It's good to know you still believe that I have managed to maintain my original adult gender, despite those rumors of my tendencies for "ambiguous" shapeshifting.

Of course I use computers, you dodo particle, how do you think I'm typing this?

But what do you mean by touching up the background digitally? Are you talking about redecorating your bathroom?

I hope you are doing well. That Spectrum idea sounds great!
Well, I better go. I'm right smack dab in the middle of a very important table jumping contest.

Reflections #4
THU, 1/10/02, 12:02 a.m. - In Response To: Hi David (Tony Solomun)
how are you, David?
Good, Tony. Thanks. Hope you are doing well.
i must say your cover to Alias 7 is fantastic,it had a nice Hockney feel to it as well.
Thanks. Did you catch the cameo of LINK (the kid from Kabuki Circle of Blood) on the Alias cover? I made all those fake flyers and posted them on a pole downtown. I wonder if they are still there.
my question is for Reflections 4, is it still on the cards? i hope you can include more of your photography and canvas paintings,
Reflections #4 will be shipping in early May or late April. I'm writing the solicition text for it right now. So it will be in the Previews catalog in a month. Please ask your Retailer to order it ahead of time, because we will probably be printing the exact amount that is pre-ordered of this one.

There will be some Photography and canvas art in it. Also probably some process pages to show the stages of creating the DD and Alias covers. And I think also figure/life drawings, and covers I've done for a recent novel and other books.

Thanks for your interest in it.

everytime when i view your work it just inspires me to paint and write, you are a true inspiration to me. thanks mate.
I'm very glad to hear that.

See you in Australia in April.

can't wait to see ya in april.

(Claire) & Kabuki requests...
THU, 1/10/02, 12:17 a.m. - In Response To: Re: Signing dates in FRANCE! (claire)
well, i'm pretty much sorted for my trip to paris, i'm going to try and be there monday and tuesday so i'll drop by at both stores and then have some time to wander in between, might go over to the big science park that i loved so much when i was last in paris for a year13 school physics trip, scary that's getting on for 8 years ago now, it'll be fun to be in paris
again.
Hi Claire,
at some point could you please post the addresses of the stores so that i can work out where they are.
From memory, I think Album is on St Germaine. I'll see if I can get the exact info for you. I don't have it right now.
would it be possible for me to buy two t-shirts from you, both girlie size, one of the noh dragon back print and the other of the control corps t-shirt. would you prefer payment in dollars instead of euros or pounds? how much shall i bring?
Dollars would be preferred, if possible. I believe we sell the shirts for $20 each or 2 for $30. So 30 in dollars would be easiest for us. Anh takes care of this kind of thing. I've asked her to make a list of all the requests of items for us to bring to the show. But for more info, you can always e-mail her at anh2tran@yahoo.com.

And I'll be happy to doodle on your Scarab poster!

I'm glad you can make it.

I'll post the hours and addresses as soon as they send them to me.

DM

lots of questions!!!!!

if i bring along my big scarab poster to either one of the singings, if you get time would you be able to scrawl some of your funky crazy stuff/doodles on it? that's the stuff i really like, the little people hiding in corners and all the spirals and triangles round peoples heads and stuff, am i making sense? i'm waffling, i'm excited, better book my train ticket!!!!!

as soon as you know timings for paris that'd be great to know, see you in a couple of weeks!! woo!

take care,
claire

Mr David Mack ,
last time you came in Paris at the Album comic shop , I wasn't able to come because of my work ( hopefully i won't be working next time : i can't believe i'm wishing for that lol ) , and i sent all my friends to see you . That was very frustrating ! I just learned that you'll be coming at the end of the month and that truly makes my day ( and my week! ). I look forward seing you

Matthieu-David

ps: if you do sketches at the comic shop , i may ask you for a Dr Doom if you don't mind . I'm a big fan of the character and i'd love to see it drawn by you . if it's ok with you of course

Hello,

That sounds fine.
I'm glad you can make it this time!
