My vote goes to HR Watson.
I also loved THE BALLAD OF DOCTOR RICHARDSON, SIN TITULO, HEAVY LIQUID, and 100%. "Smoke Navigator" was good, also "Car Crash" and "Four Cats."
There was some new material by Paul Pope in Alternative Comics's second ROSETTA ANTHOLOGY:
Quote: | Underneath covers provided by Peter Kuper and Megan Kelso, Michael Kupperman provides an extended remembrance of the Thirties, Jason Lutes delves deep into experimentation and existentialism; R. Sikoryak finds his life transformed into a comics strip, the Spanish cartoonist, Max, takes a break from his comics sabbatical to present a new direction in his comics art; Craig Thompson discusses the genesis of humanity; Paul Pope contributes a “poem-story” as well as hitherto unseen pages from his manga project at Kodansha; and Miriam Katin charts the life and death of Caspar David Friedrich through a series of paintings. The second volume also presents, for the first time in English, Martin tom Dieck’s seminal story, “Fragments Fugitif” as well as a 26-page short story by Edmond Baudoin. |
DEC032046 ROSETTA ANTHOLOGY VOLUME 2 $19.95
And this is a publisher that is in need of your support right now.

Yup. Apparently facing the possibility of shutting down... if you personally don't go order something from them right now... _________________ --Dewey Bass

Maybe I missed something but I kinda hate this guy. He's the emeperor's new clothes. If he were a movie he'd be the Blair Witch Project. It's like everyone just accepted he was good without checking to see if he actually is good. Ah, but I probably just hate him 'cause he alway's draws himself as the main character or the guy who fucks the main character's girl. I mean, he drew himself as Batman. Bob Kane didn't draw himself as Batman but this guy does. _________________ Phillip Wayne Modungo |

I'd put THB second, but Ballad comes first. Although I haven't been as satisfied with the more recent THB material than I was with the earlier stuff. And I don't have THB issue 2, but I think the bumble hip shake (?) story would have to be my favourite of his. |

I guess my favorite Paul Pope story, is the night he, and I and Andy Lee and a bunch of our pals went bowling and mayhemming. We bowled on "style points" or what really meant who could get the most laughter from everyone else while delivering the ball. My secret weapon to this was...
Not that kind of story?
I just saw him at Heroes con last month. I saw the pages of his new project! I can't say what it is but it looked supercool. |

I drove up to Heroes con to see Mack, Oeming, and Paul Pope, but he wasn't there when I was (I could only be there Friday). Was disappointed but still had a great time.
I'll buy whatever his new project is, but I wish he'd collect some of the earlier THB stuff. He's been saying he will for years! |
