'Course for all I know I prolly have read other things by black authors in the past and just didn't know that the writer was black. |
it's easy to tell, it's usually signed with an X. |

Zora Neale Hurston - Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Adultery, floods and rabies!
It's a bit of a chick story but nowhere near as annoying as Toni Morrison. The author's real life is more interesting as she did a lot of anthropological research into Louisiana hoodoo back in the 30's. Cool lady with balls of steel. _________________ It's easier to be born again than it is to grow up.

Zadie Smith, people. her first novel, WHITE TEETH, was incredible. She somehow managed to juggle a big Dickensian story with a multi-ethnic cast over a span of several decades and keep it both riveting and screamingly, laugh-out-loud funny.
Z.Z. Packer's short stories are masterful.
Give Nalo Hopkinson a read, too. She's one of the freshest voices in sf and a hell of a storyteller.
And I agree with the other suggestions- Walter Mosley in particular. I'd kill for a chance to tell a Socrates Fortlow story in comics. _________________ www.stevelieber.com |

Ellison's Invisible Man is a fantastic read, especially when the protagonist gives the university person a ride and the whole of the book once he ends up in Harlem (I think, it's been a while). |

All good suggestions, and the Invisible Man is in some University literature classes.
I read The Blues Eye by Toni Morrison and really enjoyed it. It was my girlfriend's and I read it on the plane. |

I'll second Zadie Smith. To move to an African writer, you might try Chinua Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart' or 'Arrow Of God'.
If you want some genre fiction, try anything by Gary Phillips, particularly 'The Perpetrators,' which has spot illustrations by Paul Pope. Aside from his novels, he's also done two mini-series for Oni.
Comics-wise, have you tried Ho Che Anderson's 'King' books? _________________ The closest thing I have to a website |

Octavia Butler.
Black, female, sci-fi. Which in a field dominated by middle age/older white guys is pretty unusual.
Her work tends to focus on the concepts of gender and race identity. She is one of my absolute favorite writers. |
