Update: My art gallery show opens this Thursday...
Sep 29, 2003 4:41 am

Here is an update on my new gallery show that will be opening this week! I have over 300 original art pieces in the show. It is a one man show and has the ENTIRE main gallery of the university that I graduated from. My biggest show ever.

Included are: The original art from the entire issues of Daredevil #51-53. 33 original art pages from the Daredevil Wakeup story I did with Brian Michael Bendis. Hundreds of Kabuki pages from Metamorphosis, Skin Deep and Dreams (including the entire Ghost play art, and entire Kabuki One Half art).

Four figure sculptures at real life scale. Large full figure paintings at real life scale and larger. Many, many personal figure drawings, sketches, studies and doodles. A brand new never before published black and white autobiographical 8 page story called “Self Portrait”.

The original cover art to selected published covers of Kabuki, Daredevil, Alias and more. The Tori Amos painting I did for her upcoming calendar.

Handmade artbooks including “My Invisible Friend” (as seen in pages of Kabuki), Father Hymn Book, Mother Her Book. Child hood robot sculpture and first childhood oil painting and more.

Also included are many books and books will be available for sale to the public at the night of the opening reception.

Also free posters and post cards with the show art are free to public at the night of opening reception.

Reception will have free food and drinks. Including SUSHI! Yum. I hope I have time to eat some.

Previous update below will have other info dates, times and lecture night info:

I have a new gallery exhibit of my artwork in October. It will be held in the art gallery of the University that I graduated from and will extensively feature original pages from Kabuki, Daredevil, Echo, and many non-comic related works and paintings.

The opening night reception of the gallery will be Thursday October 2 from 5-8 pm. It will be held at the main gallery of the Art Building at Northern Kentucky University. Right across the river from Cincinnati Ohio.

It is a one man show and my work will be up thoughout October but I hope people can make it on the opening night, as there will also be a signing held, a free poster for the gallery show, and books available. On Friday October 22 I will be having a lecture/discussion at the University. Last year NKU had Neil Gaiman do this at the University, and If you attended that you know how fun and interactive this can be.

The last two years the NKU Literature dept hosted something like this. I did it the first year, and Neil Gaiman did it the second year. This October the art dept is sponsoring my show and working hand in hand with other departments of the University including the Literature dept, and book stores in the area. Both events are free to the public, and everyone is welcomed to attend!

Hey friends,
Thanks for all the kind words and the support here. I check in on this board now and then and I really appreciate all the encouraging words and support for my work that you have for me on this board.

This board is a great source of news and opinions and personalities and it is also good to hear your feeback to my current DD/Echo story.

I hope Denny Haynes can make it to the show. I guess it is about an hour to an hour and a half drive norht for him. But Denny, If you can make it, I think it will be worth it to you.

Anh and I hope to see you there.

Kindest regards,
David

As far as I know, cameras and photos are allowed and encouraged.

I think there will also be an hour long interview with me playing on a loop from an interview my college drawing teacher filmed of me when I spoke to his drawing class last week.

I don't mind if you don't go for the sushi. Saves more for me:)
I'm sure there will be other stuff too.

If you can make it please introduce yourself to me and mention if you are from the board.

Best,
DM

The University is open to it being a traveling show. If you attend or work at a university, just ask your art dept to contact NKU and arrange for it to visit your school.

And yeah, It was great to be asked to do the Tori painting. I like Tori too. It is for her RAINN charity. I did a couple online interviews for it. I was also asked to do a new Tori piece for another RAINN charity event.

I'll have some other music related art at the show as well. I've done some CD covers and interier paintings and designs for jazz albums and for Japanese record lables, and I my highpoint in this arena is that once Paul McCartney commissioned me to do some drawings and paintings for him after he saw my work in Kabuki. Of course I like Paul's music and I like his paintings as well. So it was a pleasure and an honor.

Was that hilarious or what?!

As soon as he came on Anh and I were like, "F**k, why is he acting drunk?".

The funny think is that I saw him up close and spoke with him at the San Diego con and he looked really good in person. He has a lot of charisma and presence in real life.

Here is a little story that may cheer you up. Or not, who knows. But it is a true story and for some reason your post made me think of it.

A few years ago a close friend of mine worked for Arthur Anderson legal. Sorting papers and s**t. I don't really know. But he's been my friend since third grade. And he was going to take a lunch break from work and called my brother and me to meet him at a Chinese buffet on his break and eat together. So we do and we have a good time. And on the way out the door he does this thing where he purposely falls down out the door but sort of makes it looks like an accident. For some reason we all did this back in the day and thought it was funny. We'd purposely fall down a flight of stairs in a public place and people would stare at us in shock and horror.

But that got old after a while so we also started doing this thing where the rest of us would run up to the person that did the fake fall and then just start kicking them when they were on the ground. It added a whole new level to the experience. And to the looks of shock and horror from the public.

So anyway, after my friend does his funny fall and all the Chinese buffet staff stare at him like it is a potential lawsuit from a greasy floor or something, my brother and I start kicking him as he crawls out the door and into the parking lot. Then it sort of erupted into a friendly impromtu brawl. At one point I punched him in the stomach and he says "OH S**T! You just made me s**t my pants!". Then he drops his pants... and underwear... in the middle of the parking lot and looks at the contents in horror and screams really loud, "I s**t my pants! F**k! I s**t my pants!"

As soon as this happens my brother and I run away from him. We always want to put as much distance from ourselves and s**t as possible. So as I run off and fall into the grass from laughter and ridiculousness, I look over to see my friend, sans pants, screaming in the middle of the parking lot. Trou dropped. And I notice a very young boy and a very young girl in the parking lot staring at him. I'm really disturbed but I can't stop laughing.

My friend pulls pants up and GOES BACK INSIDE THE RESTURAUNT. He spends like a half hour in their restroom trying to clean up. He comes out and says that he threw his underwear in the garbage and that he is late for work from his lunch break.

That night he says they asked him why he was so late and he says in deadpan "Because I s**t my pants". He says they walk away and say nothing more. And we laugh about it like insane people.

Next moring he gets a call that from work really early and they say they don't need him to come in that day. He says ok and goes back to sleep. When he wakes up he calls back and asks why they did not need him that day. They say what they reall mean is not to ever come back at all. They say that people have been complaining that he was late from lunch and that as an excuse that he said he pissed his pants. And they say he was kicking boxes or something. He says, "No, No, I didn't piss my pants. I s**t my pants." They hang up. And that was the end of his job. He stayed unemployed for a bit, and I think went into a bit of a depression. He decided he didn't like working with people anymore an when he did get jobs we would get jops where he worked alone.

What do you think about that?
